Pittsburgh Steelers 2021 NFL Draft Recap

The 2021 NFL Draft is in the books. 259 players now have new homes. Almost assuredly, every team got every player they wanted exactly when they wanted to.

However, we are going to look at them through the prism of the way I thought they did. Did a team reach? Did they get a steal? How did that trade work out? Over the course of the next few weeks, I will recap every team’s draft class. Some will be solely be written word. Some will be accompanied by a video from the Deep Fried Draft YouTube channel with an expert from that team talking about their class.

Today, we look at the Pittsburgh Steelers.

STEELERS DRAFT CLASS

ROUND PICK POSITION NAME SCHOOL
1 24 RB Najee Harris Alabama
2 55 TE Pat Freiermuth Penn State
3 87 G Kendrick Green Illinois
4 128 OT Dan Moore, Jr. Texas A&M
4 140 LB Buddy Johnson Texas A&M
5 156 EDGE Isaiahh Lowdermilk Wisconsin
6 216 EDGE Quincy Roche Miami (FL)
7 245 CB Tre Norwood Oklahoma
7 254 P Pressley Harvin, III Georgia Tech

The Steelers started the 2020 season 11-0. They fell of the proverbial cliff after that. Pittsburgh has an aging quarterback and offensive line, so they needed to start the replenishment process with their haul of 2021 picks.

Alabama RB Najee Harris feels like a Steelers draft pick. He is a tough, hard-nosed runner that really elevated himself in the passing game this season. One could argue that this wasn’t a pressing need, however.

Speaking of players that just feel like Steelers, see exhibit B: Penn State TE Pat Freiermuth. Freiermuth is not the most gifted athletically. However, he is very similar to former Pittsburgh TE Heath Miller.

Their next two picks took aim to build some depth on the offensive line. Texas A&M OT Dan Moore Jr. is likely a reserve only for now. Illinois’ Kendrick Green has a chance to become the starting center this season.

I think Texas A&M LB Buddy Johnson has the potential to be an every down linebacker at the next level. I look for him to be the eventual replacement for Vince Williams.

I love the hustle off the edge of Quincy Roche. He should see significant snaps as a rookie.

Tre Norwood isn’t much of an athlete. However, his versatility should help him land on the 53.

Pressley Harvin III is a punter. Maybe he beats out Jordan Berry.

I did not have a draftable grade on Isaiahh Lowdermilk. If he makes the final roster, I will be surprised.

The Steelers signed the following undrafted free agents:

Shakur Brown, CB, Michigan State
Lamont Wade, S, Penn State
Jamar Watson, LB, Kentucky
Calvin Bundage, LB, Oklahoma State
Isaiah McCoy, WR, Kent State
Mark Gilbert, CB, Duke
Rico Bussey Jr., WR, Hawaii
Donovan Stiner, S, Florida

Next up we will look at the Houston Texans!
