2020 NFL Draft: Pre-Combine Safety Rankings

The 2020 NFL Draft season is in full peak. We have made it through the Senior Bowl and we are now fast approaching the Scouting Combine.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will be releasing my Pre-Combine position rankings. No score is final because of the lack of athletic testing data. This data will come after combine and pro days are completed.

Today, we will look at the safeties. I have watched tape on 24 safeties to this point.

TOP GUYS

Xavier McKinney is a triple threat safety. He is capable of covering man-to-man, he can play center field, or he can come down into the box and drop the hammer.

Grant Delpit had a down year in 2019 despite what the Thorpe Award voters would have you believe. He still has a tremendous ability to cover ground and make plays. You would like to see him tackle better ins pace, however.

SAFETIES I LIKE MORE THAN MOST

Jeremy Chinn is big, physical, and fast. He showed at the Senior Bowl that he can handle the jump up in competition. Chinn covers well, breaks on the ball quickly, and finishes.

Nigel Warrior has been a three-year starter for the Volunteers. He was extremely productive for Tennessee as a senior. Warrior finished with 60 tackles (36 solos), 7 PBUs, and four interceptions. He has nice range and ball skills.

SAFETIES I LIKE LESS THAN MOST

Ashtyn Davis is going to go higher than I have him currently. I just didn’t see a superstar when I saw him on tape. Davis had to back out of the Senior Bowl due to injury.

LATE ROUND PROSPECTS TO TAKE A FLIER ON

Kekoa Nawahine is a big and rangy safety prospect. I could even see him putting on some weight and becoming a hybrid LB. I expect him to test well at his pro day.

Next time out, we will look at the specialists.
