What to Watch: Week Three Prospect Platter

2020 NFL Draft

Week Two gave us a long look at a great number of prospects. Hell, as I write this I am still combing through the LSU/Texas game. However, the show must go on and we must look ahead. I will tell you what to watch, and more importantly, whom to watch in the seven games I will be consuming in week three.

What to Watch: Week Three Prospect Platter

Maryland @ Temple 11:00 AM CBSSN

59 DL Keiron Howard Maryland Sr 6’2 290
91 DL Adam McLean Maryland Sr 6’2 305
25 S Antoine Brooks Maryland Sr 5’11 210
5 RB Anthony McFarland Maryland Jr 5’8 196
13 WR Isaiah Wright Temple Sr 6’2 220

Maryland has come out like gangbusters through the first two weeks. The Terps averaged 70 points per game while throttling Howard and Syracuse. Junior RB Anthony McFarland is the star for coach Mike Locksley. McFarland hasn’t had to play much thus far but has four touchdowns.

For Temple, senior WR Isaiah Wright accounted for 209 all-purpose yards against Bucknell. He may need a similar performance for the Owls to hang around in this one.

Pittsburgh @ Penn State 11:00 AM ABC

74 G Steven Gonzalez Penn State Sr 6’3 325
99 EDGE Yetur Gross-Matos Penn State Jr 6’4 259
54 DL Robert Windsor Penn State Sr 6’3 295
28 LB Kylan Johnson Pittsburgh Sr 6’1 232
11 CB Dane Jackson Pittsburgh Sr 6’0 185
3 S Damar Hamlin Pittsburgh Sr 6’0 195

Penn State junior edge rusher Yetur Gross-Matos already has 3.5 sacks so far this season. Pairing him with Robert Windsor gives the Nittany Lions an advantage here. Pitt counters with Florida transfer Kylan Johnson. The former Gator has seven tackles and a sack through their first two games.

Alabama @ South Carolina 2:30 PM CBS

7 CB Trevon Diggs Alabama Sr 6’1 195
99 DL Raekwon Davis Alabama Sr 6’6 303
33 LB Anfernee Jennings Alabama Sr 6’2 265
77 OT Matt Womack Alabama Sr 6’6 326
13 QB Tua Tagovailoa Alabama Jr 6’0 218
22 RB Najee Harris Alabama Jr 6’1 230
4 WR Jerry Jeudy Alabama Jr 6’0 192
70 G Alex Leatherwood Alabama Jr 6’5 305
89 DL LaBryan Ray Alabama Jr 6’4 294
5 S Shyheim Carter Alabama Sr 5’11 195
15 S Xavier McKinney Alabama Jr 6’0 198
11 WR Henry Ruggs, III Alabama Jr 6’0 193
24 EDGE Terrell Lewis Alabama Jr 6’5 253

Like every year, Alabama is loaded in 2019 with future NFL draft picks. None are more important (or highly rated) than junior QB Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa has everything you want at the position except ideal height. However, that doesn’t seem to bother the NFL anymore. Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs, III are both potential first-round selections. On defense for the Tide, my favorite prospect of theirs is CB Trevon Diggs. Unfortunately, Diggs was injured against New Mexico State and may not play on Saturday.

For a breakdown of South Carolina prospects, please refer back to our week one preview.

Georgia Southern @ Minnesota 2:30 PM BTN

20 CB Kindle Vildor Georgia Southern Sr 5’11 180
4 CB Monquavion Brinson Georgia Southern Sr 5’11 190
1 RB Rodney Smith Minnesota Sr 5’11 210
6 WR Tyler Johnson Minnesota Sr 6’1 200
45 EDGE Carter Coughlin Minnesota Sr 6’3 245
21 LB Kamal Martin Minnesota Sr 6’3 235

For the Golden Gophers, the shining star is wide receiver, Tyler Johnson. Johnson has terrific hands and catch radius. He will be tested by a pair of Georgia Southern corners. I am somewhat familiar with Kindle Vildor. However, Brinson was on the Senior Bowl watch list as well. I look forward to seeing how either handle Tyler Johnson and the other Minnesota receivers. I also should be watching them in person in a few weeks when they play at South Alabama.

Iowa @ Iowa State 3:00 PM FS1

74 OT Tristan Wirfs Iowa Jr 6’5 320
4 QB Nathan Stanley Iowa Sr 6’4 212
77 OT Alaric Jackson Iowa Jr 6’6 320
94 EDGE A.J. Epenesa Iowa Jr 6’4 277
11 CB Michael Ojemudia Iowa Sr 6’0 199
11 TE Chase Allen Iowa State Jr 6’6 240
42 LB Marcel Spears Iowa State Sr 6’0 215

The Cy-Hawk trophy is on the line in this one. This game for me is really about two players: Iowa OT Tristan Wirfs and edge rusher A.J. Epenesa. If anyone has a good game it will just be the cherry on top.

Here is an example of Wirfs freakish strength:

Florida State @ Virginia 6:30 PM ACCN

1 CB Levonta Taylor Florida State Sr 5’9 186
3 RB Cam Akers Florida State Jr 5’10 210
21 DL Marvin Wilson Florida State Jr 6’4 318
34 CB Bryce Hall Virginia Sr 6’0 200
3 QB Bryce Perkins Virginia Sr 6’2 210
11 LB Charles Snowden Virginia Jr 6’6 225

Bryce Perkins is an ascending QB prospect. I studied him over the summer and found a lot to like. The top prospect for the Cavaliers is likely corner, Bryce Hall. Hall could have been a second-round a year ago but opted to return.

For the Noles, the talent pool is a lot drier than it used to be. Junior Marvin Wilson is a force on the interior defensive line. Cam Akers is a mid-round running back prospect at the moment.

TCU @ Purdue 6:30 PM BTN

89 TE Brycen Hopkins Purdue Sr 6’5 240
9 DL Lorenzo Neal Purdue Sr 6’2 315
21 LB Markus Bailey Purdue Sr 6’1 235
6 RB Darius Anderson TCU Sr 5’11 208
1 WR Jalen Reagor TCU Jr 5’11 195
77 OT Lucas Niang TCU Sr 6’6 328
12 CB Jeff Gladney TCU Sr 6’0 183

Bad news out of West Lafayette this week as senior LB Markus Bailey will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. It is an unfortunate circumstance for the Boilermakers and for Bailey. The Purdue offense has the best prospect in the game. He just isn’t draft eligible. Rondale Moore is a superstar.

For TCU, my main focus will be on receiver Jalen Reagor and OT Lucas Niang.
